Laser eye surgery has transformed the lives of millions by improving vision and reducing dependency on glasses or contact lenses. If you’re considering this life-changing procedure, it’s normal to have questions about what lies ahead. What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery has become a common solution for people seeking long-term improvement in their eyesight, with high rates of success and satisfaction. Often referred to as vision correction surgery, laser eye surgery uses advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. This reshaping corrects refractive errors, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, allowing light to focus correctly on the retina for clear vision. There are several types of laser eye surgery available, each with its specific benefits and ideal candidates. The most well-known type of laser eye surgery is LASIK, where a small flap is created on the cornea, which is then lifted so the underlying corneal tissue can be reshaped using a laser. Other options include PRK, where he outer layer of the cornea is removed entirely before reshaping the tissue, as well as SMILE, a newer and minimally invasive option in which a small incision is made to remove a tiny piece of corneal tissue, reshaping the cornea and correcting vision.

           Preparing for Laser Surgery

Proper preparation is critical for a smooth process and optimal results. Prepare for your surgical procedure by having an initial consultation with a qualified ophthalmologist to determine whether or not you're a good candidate for laser eye surgery. If you wear contacts, you'll need to switch to glasses for at least a few weeks before surgery because contact lenses can affect the shape of your cornea. Your doctor may also advise you to stop wearing eye makeup or using certain products before the procedure.

           What Happens During Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting and lasts about 30 minutes or less. The procedure will begin by numbing the eye with eye drops to ensure the procedure will be painless for you. The eye will then be positioned using a device that will hold your eyelids open and prevent blinking. Depending on the specific procedure, a laser is used to reshape the cornea. During this step, you may be asked to focus on a target light. Some procedures involve replacing a flap or ensuring proper sealing of the cornea. While the laser treatment takes only a few minutes, you may spend additional time before and after to allow for setup and monitoring.

: Avoid rubbing your eyes, wearing makeup, or engaging in strenuous activities as directed by your doctor.

            Gradual Improvement

: While many patients notice improved vision within days, full recovery may take weeks.

Like any medical procedure, laser eye surgery comes with some risks. While complications are rare, it’s essential to be aware of the potential side effects, including:

            Dry eyes

Glare or halos around lights, especially at night

            Overcorrection or undercorrection of vision

             Infection or delayed healing

Choosing an experienced and qualified surgeon significantly reduces the likelihood of these risks.

Eyeglasses 101: Choosing the Right Pair for Your Face

Eyeglasses are more than just a vision correction tool; they are a fashion statement and a reflection of your personality. Finding the ideal pair of eyeglass frames goes beyond choosing what looks good; it’s about combining comfort, functionality, and style. If you’ve struggled to find the perfect pair or are unsure which frames best suit your face shape, this guide will help you make an informed decision.

Why Choosing the Right Eyeglass Frames Matters

The right eyeglass frames can enhance your appearance, boost your confidence, and ensure optimal comfort during wear. On the flip side, poorly selected frames can take away from your overall style and feel uncomfortable during long periods of use. This is why understanding what fits and flatters your facial structure is key when shopping for eyeglasses.

           Identifying Your Face Shape

Knowing your face shape is the first step in finding the right frames. Here are the five primary face shapes and the types of eyeglass frames that suit each best:

           1. Round Face

             Characteristics:

Soft, curved lines with proportional width and length; no sharp angles.

             Best Frames:

Rectangular and angular frames. These add definition and create a contrast to balance out the roundness.

             Avoid:

Round or small frames, as they can exaggerate the roundness.

           2. Oval Face

            Characteristics:

Balanced proportions, slightly longer than wide with gently rounded edges.

             Best Frames:

Almost any style works, but square, rectangular, or bold shapes highlight the balance of an oval face.

             Avoid:

Frames that are too large and overwhelm your face.

           3. Square Face

             Characteristics:

Strong jawline, broad forehead, and sharp angles; similar length and width proportions.

             Best Frames:

Round or oval frames soften the angles of a square face.

             Avoid:

Angular frames, which may accentuate sharp features.

           4. Heart-Shaped Face

            Characteristics:

Broad forehead, wide cheekbones, narrowing down to a pointed chin.

            Best Frames:

Frames with wider bottoms (aviators or rimless) balance the width of the forehead with the chin.

             Avoid:

Frames with heavy or embellished tops, as they emphasize the width of the forehead.

           5. Diamond Face

            Characteristics:

Narrow forehead and jawline with prominent cheekbones.

Cat-eye and oval frames complement this face shape well by highlighting the cheekbones.

             Avoid:

Narrow frames that fail to accentuate your unique facial structure.

Keep it timeless with black, tortoiseshell, or sleek metal frames.

Your eyes are intricate organs with highly specialized needs. Just like the rest of your body, they require a steady supply of nutrients to perform well and withstand wear over time. Poor nutrition can contribute to issues such as dry eyes, cataracts, macular degeneration, and even vision loss.

           Essential Nutrients for Healthy Eyes

           1. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is indispensable for maintaining good vision. It helps protect the surface of the eye (cornea) and prevents conditions like night blindness. You can find vitamin A in foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale.

           2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids alleviate dry eyes and support overall eye function. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are excellent sources of these healthy fats.

           3. Lutein & Zeaxanthin

These antioxidants are vital for protecting the eyes from harmful light and reducing the risk of macular degeneration. They’re found in leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and collards, as well as in eggs.

           4. Vitamin C

Vitamin C boosts the health of blood vessels in the eyes and may prevent cataracts. Oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli are rich in this nutrient.

Zinc helps transport vitamin A from your liver to your retina, making it necessary for producing protective melanin. Foods like oysters, beef, chickpeas, and fortified cereals are rich in zinc.

What to Expect During Your First Trip to the Eye Doctor

Your first trip to the eye might be a bit nerve-racking because you don’t know what to expect and you don’t know how bad your eyes are. The good thing is you will undoubtedly be able to see better after your eye exam because you’ll get contacts, glasses, or maybe both! Here are the things you can expect when you go to your first eye doctor appointment.

Questions about your medical & eye history -

It’s important that the eye doctor gets to know your medical history a little bit because your medical history could explain some eye issues. Your medical history could give the eye doctor an idea of any additional things they may need to test for. Your eye history will just be how have your eyes been up to this point in your life, do you consider yourself far or near-sighted, and anything else that could help them get a background of your eyes before they examine them.

            Vision test -

Your eye doctor will perform a standard vision test with you that will consist of you reading letters off a Snellen chart that consists of 11 rows of capital letters. Each row on the chart gets smaller as you get closer to the bottom, and you must stand 20 feet away from the chart. Your eye doctor will instruct you to read certain lines and depending on how you do they will move further and further down the chart.

            Physical eye exam -

This is the part of the visit where the eye doctor examines the inner parts of your eye to check for anything out of the ordinary. Typically, this is done by giving your dilating drops to make it easier for the eye doctor to get a good look at your eyes. However, the dilation drops will make your eyes very sensitive to light for hours after the exam, so you need to have a ride home from the eye center.

            Glaucoma test -

Glaucoma is caused by nerves connecting the eye to the brain being damaged, which is typically caused by high eye pressure. To test for glaucoma, your eye doctor will use a machine to put a puff of air directly in each eye. The machine can measure the amount of pressure in each of your eyes.

Recommendations to correct your vision -

After all is said and done, your eye doctor will typically give you the option of getting contacts, glasses, or both. Most people only get one or the other because typically insurance only covers contacts or glasses each visit.

What are Intraocular Lens Implants?

Read what intraocular lens implants are on our blog. Contact Buffalo Eye Center for Intraocular lens implants and more for clients in Tonawanda, NY & beyond!

What is an Intraocular Lens Implant?

An intraocular lens (also known as IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It takes over the image-focusing function in your eye in order to replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. IOLs are most commonly used as part of cataract surgery but they are also able to correct a wider range of vision problems including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Intraocular lenses are permanent, and because they are made of a perfectly transparent material, they will never cloud. IOLs are also designed to be lightweight and flexible, so they will not be affected by physical activities or by rubbing the eye. IOLs cannot fall out, do not require cleaning, and do not change the appearance of the eye in any way. They also cannot be felt once placed.

           Types of Intraocular Lenses

Depending on your specific eye issues and desired outcome, there are several different types of IOLs to choose from including:

              Toric

             - This is the go-to option if you have astigmatism. Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an uneven curve in your cornea or lens. The toric lens is designed to correct that refractive error.

              Multifocal Implants

             - These IOLs provide both distance and near focus at the same time. The lens has different zones set at different powers.

              Accommodating Implants

             - These lenses move or change shape inside your eye, allowing focusing at different distances.

              Monofocal Implants

             - A monofocal IOL has only one focal point. It can be set to focus on close, medium, or distance vision based on your preference. The most common type of lens used with cataract surgery.

How Long Do IOL Implants Last & Are They Safe?

IOL implants are made from materials that do not break down, so they will never need to be replaced. However, the treatment is reversible so implants can be exchanged if you are not experiencing vision improvements.

While there are risks associated with any type of surgery, complications after having an intraocular lens placed are rare. There may be side effects after the procedure which include bleeding, redness, and inflammation -- but these will resolve quickly. It is important to follow aftercare directions provided by your ophthalmologist to prevent infection or inflammation.

Intraocular Lens Implants and Cataract Surgery

When an intraocular lens implant is used to replace a cataract or cloudy lens, the procedure is referred to as cataract surgery. During cataract eye surgery the cloudy or cataract lens of the eye will be removed and your lens will be replaced with a new lens to improve your vision. The cataract surgeon will calculate the power of the replacement lens implant through special measurements of the length and curvature of the eye. Prior to any surgery, your ophthalmologist will examine your eyes and assess your medical history carefully to determine if you are a good candidate for an IOL.

The Importance of Regular Eye Exams

If you live in the Buffalo, Kenmore, or Tonawanda area, schedule an eye exam with the eye doctors at Buffalo Eye Center. We provide eye care for many conditions.

Why Regular Eye Exams are Important

Regular visits to the eye doctor are a critical part of any healthy lifestyle - regardless of your current ability to see. Both adults and children should be having regular eye exams to ensure that they are able to see as best as possible.

Not only do regular eye exams give your eye doctor a chance to help you correct or adapt to vision changes, but an eye exam is also one of the best ways to protect your vision because it can detect eye problems at their earliest stage - when they’re most treatable. During an eye exam, an eye doctor is able to check for signs of eye diseases or chronic conditions that can affect not only your vision but your overall health (such as diabetes or glaucoma).

Why You Should Have Regular Eye Exams

Vision changes can have a profound effect on your day-to-day life, and it is important to identify and treat these common issues. A comprehensive eye exam with pupil dilation can detect systemic conditions well before you experience other symptoms.

Some eye diseases only show symptoms when the condition is advanced. A comprehensive eye exam provides the full assurance of vision and eye health that an in-store sight test or a school vision test cannot.

Eye exams are critical because many vision-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy have no or minimal symptoms until the disease has progressed.

If you notice problems with your eyes such as red eyes, eye allergies, dry eyes, eye swelling, or eye pain, always contact an eye doctor since they are specifically trained to treat eye diseases.

What Does an Eye Doctor Check for During the Eye Exam?

During an eye exam, the health of your cornea and iris are checked using a slit lamp microscope. Your eye pressure is checked to determine if you are at risk for glaucoma. After inserting dilating drops, your doctor will check the health of your retina and look for problems like
