Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million Americans which is more than cataracts and glaucoma combined. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults that are over the age of 50 and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1.8 million people have AMD.

Macular Degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside back layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them via the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. The retina’s central portion, known as the macula, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail.

Types of Macular Degeneration

There are two basic types of macular degeneration: “dry” and “wet.” Approximately 85% to 90% of cases of macular degeneration are “dry “while 10 to 15% are the “wet” type.

Dry Form: Yellow deposits called drusen form in the macula. A few small drusen may not cause changes in vision but as they get larger and increase in number, they might dim or distort your vision.

Wet Form: Blood vessels grow from underneath the macula which leak blood and fluid into the retina. Vision is distorted so that straight lines look wavy and there may also be blind spots and loss of central vision.

Call Us Today to Learn About Our Macular Degeneration Treatment Options!

There is no absolute cure for macular degeneration, but there are treatments which could help you from losing too much of your vision. Some of these treatment options include:

Anti-Angiogenesis Drugs - These medications block the creation of blood vessels and leaking from the vessels in your eye that cause wet macular degeneration. Many people who’ve taken these drugs got back vision that was lost. You might need to have this treatment multiple times.

Laser Therapy - High-energy laser light can destroy abnormal blood vessels growing in your eye.

Photodynamic Laser Therapy - A light-sensitive drug is injected into the bloodstream, and it’s absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels. A laser is then shined into the eye to trigger the medication to damage those blood vessels.

Low Vision Aids - These devices have special lenses or electronic systems to create larger images of nearby things. They help people who have vision loss from macular degeneration make the most of their remaining vision.
